Rubber products are everywhere: tires of vehicles and aircrafts, shoe soles,
hoses, conveyor belts and numerous other applications. Vulcanization is a
long-established process for toughening rubber that depends on the use of zinc oxide. However, this is a toxic material for aquatic life, so new EU regulations demand the minimization of its use in vehicle tires.

At MONOLITHOS, we design and develop sustainable zinc oxide-based nanomaterials for the vulcanization of rubber. Our nanomaterials comprise a very low zinc oxide content, such that it is feasible to produce vehicle tires and other rubber products that contain less than 1% zinc without any compromise in their properties.
