LABORATORY
Synthetic Gas Bench for marine applications
A Synthetic Gas Bench (SGB), a fully customizable lab-scale device that was specifically designed and manufactured in order to allow the evaluation of catalytic activity of catalysts in powder form, under simulated ship diesel engine exhaust conditions, with emphasis on the reduction of SOx emissions derived from ships.
The apparatus consists of three regions; the gas feed, the reactor and the gas analysis. This device allows the mixing of different gases (CO, CO2, SO2, CxHy, N2) to the appropriate concentrations, creating a reactant gas feed that simulates the exhaust gas emissions of marine diesel engines.
The reactant gas feed passes through a catalyst in powder form, which is loaded in a fixed bed reactor placed inside a heated furnace. At the outlet of the reactor a Gas Chromatograph (GC) is connected in line, which is used to analyze and determine the concentration of the reactants and the products of each catalytic reaction. The GC is equipped with three detectors: A Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD), a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) and a Flame Photometric Detector (FPD), which is used to detect and analyze sulfur containing compounds.
After mixing the gases, the mixture is fed in a U-shaped quartz reactor and then passes through a water trapping system, to remove any moisture present in the reactor effluent. Two gas analysers connected in series are used for the measurement of the concentration of gases.
- Catalytic activity performance validation for maritime applications with gas chromatography
- Simultaneous detection of COx, NOx, SOx, CxHy and O2.
