PROMETHEUS Project Description
PROMETHEUS stands for Platinum gRoup MEtals saving by monoliTHos Efficient and disrUptive catalySt innovation. The PROMETHEUS project aims at tackling and solving a strong need and challenge at European level, namely replacing the PGMs in autocatalysts and decoupling Europe from PGMs, a critical raw material. The project represents a disruptive innovation aiming at industrialising PROMETHEUS production, demonstrate its performances on large scale and for the first time introduce to the market a novel eco-friendly nano-structured automotive catalyst substituting up to 67% of PGMs present in autocatalysts with copper nanoparticles, while keeping the same performances and durability and reducing production cost.
MONOLITHOS participation role
MONOLITHOS was in charge of the overall Project implementation, coordinating internal personnel and external subcontractor toward project’s targets. In specific, MONOLITHOS took care of all the activities related to the successful piloting and subsequent scaling-up of a product-ready version of the PROMETHEUS solution, through the development, testing and scaling up of the production of the catalytic washcoat powder containing Palladium, Rhodium, and Copper nanoparticles that was used for the production of a series of prototypes that were successfully validated in terms of performance. The optimised prototypes were demonstrated at full-scale and the necessary actions for the certification/homologation of Prometheus Catalysts according to the EC Directives for the Market Replication were performed. MONOLITHOS was also responsible to set up and execute effective exploitation and marketing activities ensuring the creation of a strong customer base to be involved already during the project.
